Wai'olena Beach Park, located on the eastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii, nestled between Carlsmith Beach Park and Leleiwi Beach Park, is a delightful addition to the island's array of beach parks. Situated approximately 5 miles south of downtown Hilo, this park offers a unique coastal experience.
While Wai'olena Beach Park may not feature a traditional sandy shoreline ideal for water activities, it serves as an excellent destination for sightseeing, open-air picnics, and the serene sound of waves crashing against the rocky coast. Caution is advised when it comes to swimming and snorkeling due to lava rock shallows and strong currents. However, skilled surfers and enthusiasts can relish the sight of adept wave riders taking on the challenging curls. On any given day, you may also witness fishermen on the shore hauling in their fresh catches. Keep an eye out for Green Sea Turtles often seen feeding on algae or resting along the shoreline.
To the west of the parking area lies a grassy space with pavilions and picnic tables, while the east side features a sizable pond. The pond provides a refreshing spot for a swim, but the rocks can be slippery, so exercise caution (water shoes are recommended). The shoreline is picturesque, framed by a cluster of graceful coconut palms along the rocky beach. Don't miss the stunning sunrise from this location, offering excellent photography opportunities. The parking lot is compact but generally provides enough spaces for visitors to enjoy sunbathing, surfing, or a delightful family picnic. Wai'olena Beach Park is a must-visit during your exploration of the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii.
