Aiopio Fish Trap

The Big Island's Ancient Fishtrap

Honokohau Beach's shores are adorned with ancient relics, dark lava rocks that once formed the 'Ai'opio Fishtrap—a testament to the ingenious fishing techniques of native Hawaiians. These remnants provide a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the islands.

The 'Ai'opio Fishtrap was meticulously crafted by Hawaiians to capture fish. A strategically designed opening in the trap connected it to the sea, allowing fish to enter freely. Inside the walls of the enclosure, fish were safely stored until they were needed. During high tide, fish swam into the trap through the seaward opening or over submerged walls. At low tide, they remained confined within the enclosure, making them easy to catch with nets.

It's important to distinguish fishtraps from fishponds. While fishponds are used for raising fish, fishtraps like 'Ai'opio are designed for capturing and catching fish directly from the ocean.

Spanning 1.7 acres, 'Ai'opio Fishtrap features a unique design, with stone and coral walls carefully constructed along the naturally curving shoreline. This fishtrap served a variety of purposes and played a significant role in the daily lives of Hawaiians well into recent history. Even today, it stands as a tangible reminder of the profound connection between native Hawaiians and the sea.

Although the passage of time has led to the gradual collapse of the wall, the National Park Service Submerged Resources Center has taken the initiative to comprehensively map the seawall. This marks the beginning of efforts to restore and preserve this historical treasure, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn about the remarkable traditions of native Hawaiians and their resourceful interactions with the ocean.
