Waikaumalo Park

A hidden spot off the main road north of Hilo on the Big Island

Waikaumalo Park, remains an unspoken gem in most guidebooks. Tucked away along Old Mamalahoa Highway, a scenic route that unveils the hidden beauty of the Big Island, this park offers a unique escape.

Although modest in size, with just a dozen parking spots, the park boasts open and covered picnic benches, outhouses, and an overgrown trail that parallels the serene Waikaumalo Stream. However, the highlight here is the Waikaualo Stream. Just a short stroll down a grassy embankment, the river's bend shelters a couple of deep pools perfect for cliff jumping. While not expansive, the stream, with its refreshing waters, makes for an inviting swimming hole, ideal for a cooling dip on a hot day.

In the spring, the park bursts into vibrant life as the Royal poinciana trees drape the surroundings with a breathtaking canopy of fiery red blossoms.

For the adventurous, a series of waterfalls awaits further up Waikaumalo Stream. Accessing these falls demands canyoneering skills and specialized equipment, and the park serves as the endpoint for those embarking on the journey from the falls and rappelling downriver. Discover the hidden beauty of Waikaumalo Park and the enchanting landscapes that surround it along the Old Mamalahoa Highway.
