Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site

Explore Oahu's History

Nestled atop the mountain just northeast of Waimea Bay Beach Park in the Haleiwa region on Oahu's North Shore, Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site stands as the island's largest Heiau. Accessible via the Kamehameha Highway (83), take the mauka turn onto Pupukea Road near Pupukea Beach Park/Shark's Cove Beach. Follow the winding road, taking the first right turn to reach the parking lot.

Selected strategically, this site played a pivotal role in ancient Hawaiian communication, utilizing signal fires to relay messages between Oahu and Wailua on Kauai. In 1792, during Captain George Vancouver's visit, a tragic incident occurred, resulting in the death of three crew members. Some historical accounts propose that these men were sacrificed at Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau. Designated as a Registered National Historic Landmark in 1965, the site ensures preservation and protection for future generations. Explore the rich history and significance of this cultural treasure on Oahu's North Shore.
