Pōkaʻī Bay Beach Park

Oahu's Best Bay To Learn How To Surf

Pōkaʻī Bay Beach Park, situated between the Waiʻanae Small Boat Harbor and Kaneʻilio Point, stands as the most sheltered bay on the Waiʻanae shore. Named after the renowned coconut grove, Ka Uluniu o Pokaʻī, which once adorned its backshore, this bay is steeped in historical significance. The bay encompasses the Waiʻanae Army Recreation Center, a 20-acre recreational facility acquired by the federal government in 1918, and the public haven of Pokaʻī Bay Beach Park, spanning 15 acres on Kaneʻilio Point.

Once the location of the original Waiʻanae Small Boat Harbor, dedicated in October 1953, it was relocated to the west end of the bay in 1980. The breakwater protecting the initial harbor now shields the swimming beach during high surf and serves as a popular fishing site. With a wide reef at its center, the bay offers gentle waves, making it an ideal surf spot for beginners. Explore the beauty and history of Pōkaʻī Bay Beach Park on the Waiʻanae coast.
