Onomea Bay Trail

Two Short Trails On The Big Island

Explore the beauty of Onomea Bay with a delightful hike on the Onomea Bay Trail and Donkey Trail. These two short trails offer an enchanting journey from the Scenic Drive section of the Old Mamalahoa Road to a picturesque narrow promontory in Onomea Bay.

The Donkey Trail, aptly named for its historical use as a cargo trail for donkeys, follows the serene course of Onomea Stream. It's a charming hike that delves into the area's past when donkeys carried goods from the now-defunct Onomea Bay harbor. Although Onomea Bay once boasted the magnificent Onomea Arch, nature had other plans when an earthquake led to its collapse in 1956.

To make the most of your hike, choose sunny days as these trails can become treacherously slippery when wet. Be patient and allow them time to dry out after a rain shower.

The Onomea Trail takes you along the path of the Old Government Road, leading you into the lush Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden. A brief detour along Alakahi Stream adds to the trail's charm.

Best of all, these trails come at no cost, making them accessible to all nature enthusiasts. However, if you wish to explore the magnificent grounds of the Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden, an admission fee applies. Enjoy a day of natural wonder as you explore these beautiful Hawaiian trails.
