Discover the natural wonders of Onomea Bay, a cherished hiking destination located to the north of Hilo. This coastal gem features a series of enchanting trails leading to the bay's picturesque coves along the shore.
The Onomea Trail and the Donkey Trail are the key trails to explore Onomea Bay. Together, they form a concise half-mile route, but the adventure extends with side trails that wind towards the ocean. While you traverse these trails, you'll be captivated by the beauty of the coves and shoreline. Keep an eye out for unexpected large waves, and make sure to equip yourself with sturdy hiking shoes as the terrain can be muddy and rocky in places. For a convenient start, consider commencing your journey from the southern trailhead of the Onomea Trail if parking is available.
The trailheads for the Onomea Trail System are situated along the Onomea Scenic Route, which is part of the Old Mamalahoa Highway. To reach this natural haven, drive north on Belt Road (Highway 19) from the Hilo waterfront, covering approximately five miles. Look for a prominent blue sign indicating the "Scenic Route 4 Miles Long" and take a right. The first trailhead awaits just over a mile from this point, featuring informative signs about the trail. Find parking spaces along the road shoulder, ensuring your vehicle is as far off the road as possible. Prepare for an unforgettable adventure through the wonders of Onomea Bay.
