The enchanting Kohala Forest Reserve graces the northern part of Hawaiʻi Island, spanning the districts of Hāmākua and Kohala. Originally established on October 13, 1913, through a Governor's Proclamation, this pristine reserve extends over an expansive 17,826 acres, featuring four distinct sections of natural wonder.
For nature enthusiasts, Kohala Forest Reserve offers a unique opportunity for game mammal and game bird hunting. The State of Hawai‘i has designated several public hunting areas, known as Hunting Units, across the major islands: Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, Moloka‘i, Lana‘i, and the big island of Hawai‘i, each providing specific hunting times throughout the year. Additionally, private lands also offer exciting hunting opportunities.
It's important to note that the Division of Forestry & Wildlife (DOFAW) may occasionally adjust or cancel hunting seasons in specific areas, taking into consideration changing weather conditions and animal populations. Be sure to stay informed about hunting season details and regulations to ensure a successful and responsible hunting experience within the Kohala Forest Reserve.
