Originally established on October 13, 1913, through a Governor's Proclamation, this pristine reserve extends over an expansive 17,826 acres, featuring four distinct sections of natural wonder.

For nature enthusiasts, Kohala Forest Reserve offers a unique opportunity for game mammal and game bird hunting. The State of Hawai‘i has designated several public hunting areas, known as Hunting Units, across the major islands: Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, Moloka‘i, Lana‘i, and the big island of Hawai‘i, each providing specific hunting times throughout the year. Additionally, private lands also offer exciting hunting opportunities.
