Kehena Black Sand Beach

The Big Island's Free Spirited Beach

Kehena Beach, also known as Dolphin Beach, is a unique and intimate gem nestled on the east coast of Hawaii's Big Island in the Puna district. This narrow black sand beach boasts a remarkable feature – spinner dolphins frequently grace its waters with their presence. For this reason, it's no wonder that Kehena Beach has earned its alternative name, Dolphin Beach. This picturesque beach is cherished by both locals and visitors who relish spending an entire day on its black sand shores while taking in the rugged beauty of the Puna coastline.

If you're embarking on a scenic drive along the enchanting Red Road, exploring nearby treasures like Pohoiki, another black sand beach, and the pristine MacKenzie State Park, don't miss the opportunity to visit Kehena Beach. This spot along the Puna Coast is a haven for free-spirited, open-minded individuals and those embracing alternative lifestyles. As a testament to its unconventional charm, some beachgoers may choose to enjoy their visit clothing-optional. Thus, it's a place where you can embrace a sense of freedom and self-expression while enjoying the natural surroundings. Please be aware that clothing-optional sunbathing is common at this beach, so visit at your own discretion.

Kehena Black Sand Beach originated from a 1955 lava flow. Notably, a prominent rock formation at one end of the beach marks the conclusion of the lava flow, a testament to the island's ever-evolving landscape.

To reach Kehena Beach, venture to mile marker 19 along highway 137 in Puna. In the past, Kehena was a popular destination due to its twin black sand beaches and easy accessibility. However, in 1975, a substantial earthquake led to the deterioration of the stairs and caused the beach to recede by three feet. As a result, the easiest way to access the beach is by parking at the lookout and following the path on the left side of the parking area, leading to the smaller pocket of sand that remains, offering a tranquil and unique beach experience.
