Nestled within the 'Ahihi-Kinau Marine Preserve, this protected bay emerges as a haven for diverse fish species, creating an ideal environment for snorkeling enthusiasts. Established as a natural area reserve in 1973, 'Ahihi-Kina'u prohibits fishing, emphasizing its commitment to marine conservation. Although not a recreational park, the reserve permits snorkeling during designated hours from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The bay, characterized by a gradual depth increase, offers a snorkeler's paradise with intricate coral formations to the east. Explore sand trenches and shallow caves in convoluted canyons near the shore, while encountering Hawaiian Green Sea turtles further out. Located approximately 5 miles from Kihei and a mile from Big Beach along Makena Alanui Road, Ahihi Bay demands a $5 non-resident fee per vehicle, contributing to maintenance and conservation projects.
Exercise caution during adverse wave conditions, and avoid snorkeling when waves pose a threat. Additionally, safeguard valuables due to the parking's distance from the bay.
