Sandy Beach

Oahu's "Broke Neck Beach"

Situated on Oahu's southeastern shore, Sandy Beach Park emerges as a haven for seasoned bodyboarders and bodysurfers, characterized by its formidable waves and powerful shorebreak. Recognized as one of Hawaii's most challenging beaches, it has earned monikers such as "the beach of broken necks" or "Broke Neck Beach" due to the inherent risks. Unfortunately, several individuals have suffered paralysis or drowned while engaging with Sandy's waves.

Visitors will encounter red warning flags and posted signs throughout the year, cautioning against perils like strong currents, hazardous shorebreak, elevated surf, and sharp coral. Even during seemingly calm seas, a rarity given the consistent waves, potential threats from dangerous currents persist.

Beyond the thrill-seekers, Sandy Beach Park attracts spectators who come to marvel at the waves, capture photos, and unwind on the shore. While lacking beachside shade, the park features a spacious grassy area equipped with picnic tables, restrooms, and showers, providing a multifaceted experience for beachgoers.
