Nestled at the bottom of the Kona Paradise region, Pebbles Beach is a unique but fiercely powerful coastal destination. Accessible via an incredibly steep road, this beach is an exhilarating 20-mile drive south of Kona between mile markers 96 and 97, off Highway 11. The descent to the beach is swift, involving a drop of 1,050 feet over a mere 6,000 feet of driving, resembling the famed road into Waipi'o Valley in steepness.
Pebbles Beach is renowned for its potent waves, known to be tumultuous even during relatively calm conditions. It can be quite an adventure to visit, as the waves here are notably powerful, and it's not unusual to witness fish being propelled out of the water even on tranquil days.
This unique shoreline is characterized by an expanse of large, water-worn pebbles, producing a fascinating sound when the surf crashes onto the shore. While the waves can be a challenge, those brave enough can enjoy the thrill of being carried up and down the steep beach by the surging waters, though it's crucial to avoid the shore break.
If you venture just a 5-minute walk to your right, you'll discover a small cove featuring smaller pebbles, some with black and green sand beneath them. While not ideal for swimming, this secluded cove offers privacy and a unique experience, with the waves creating a fizzing sensation, resembling a glass of soda, against the shore.
