Makole'a Beach

The Big Island's Hidden Gem

Makole'a Beach, a hidden gem in Kona, boasts unique black sand created during the 1801 Hualalai lava flow. Despite its obscurity, this distinctive black sand beach is a true Hawaiian treasure, and its existence is known to only a few shoreline fishermen and adventurous explorers.

Reaching Makole'a Beach offers two options. For those with 4WD vehicles, driving to Kekaha Kai State Park is the first step. Upon arriving, take a left at the initial parking lot and follow the southbound lava road. Pay close attention to the park's closing time and be punctual. After about 0.6 miles, you'll find a subtle car path, marked by coral, leading 1,100 feet over lava to the shoreline. If the rugged terrain discourages driving, you can choose to walk this last part.

The alternative route begins by parking at Kekaha Kai State Park and embarking on a 15-20 minute shoreline stroll. The sandy trail may be interrupted at one point, so walking on the smooth pahoehoe lava behind the beach boulders is advisable during this section. Just before reaching the captivating black sand beach, you'll encounter a small cove that provides ideal conditions for a quick dip during low to mid-tide and calm sea days.

Makole'a Beach offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling and SCUBA diving, with a beautiful coral field to the north and south. While visibility is only fair near the beach, it improves as you venture farther into the water. The sandy center serves as a suitable entry point, but remain cautious of unchecked waves.

For those who walked to the beach, consider returning via an alternate route across the lava field, offering a change of scenery and a deeper connection with this secluded paradise. Explore Makole'a Beach, an enchanting oasis hidden from the masses.
