Kolekole Beach Park

Explore The Big Island

Kolekole Beach Park, situated on the northeast side of Hawaii, approximately 10.5 miles north of Hilo in Honomu, beckons visitors with its serene natural beauty. The park has long been a favored destination for local residents, thanks to its expansive grassy areas, perfect for picnics. As a result, it tends to get crowded on weekends and holidays due to its popularity.

Recent years have seen a reduction in park attendance. Since April 18, 2017, the park has been closed due to lead-impacted soil. The affected area extends beneath Kolekole Stream Bridge for about 300 feet in the mauka direction. Originally part of a railroad, the bridge was reconstructed for vehicular use in 1950 after being destroyed by a tsunami in 1946. Over time, lead paint from the bridge seeped into the soil below. While all lead paint on the bridge was removed in 2001, it couldn't prevent soil contamination.

To mitigate potential lead exposure, measures have been implemented, including maintaining healthy grass, installing fencing around the most contaminated area, posting warning signs, and restricting activities that might disturb bare soil. Long-term cleanup solutions are under consideration, and public input will be sought. The hope is to remediate the situation and restore the park to its former glory, so stay tuned for updates.

Currently, the park remains closed and somewhat overgrown. Swimming in the ocean is discouraged due to hazardous conditions, but the Kolekole Stream is open for a refreshing dip. Fed by Akaka Falls, a popular attraction about four miles above Honomu, the stream offers a picturesque environment. It's essential to note that strong currents make swimming near the stream's mouth ill-advised.

At Kolekole Beach, you'll encounter black sand and rocks. The beach itself is modest, and during rough conditions, waves may wash over it and into the stream. With driftwood scattered along the shore, visitors can find a peaceful spot to sit or recline while listening to the rhythmic ocean waves. Some daring surfers venture onto the waters here, seeking the thrill of catching impressive waves.
