Explore Maui's Naturla Crater Formation

Standing majestically over Maui, Haleakalā Crater is a natural wonder visible from every corner of the island. Soaring to 10,023 feet above sea level, this dormant volcano showcases a mesmerizing array of landscapes and skyscapes. The name "Haleakalā" translates to "house of the sun" in Hawaiian, with local legend recounting how the demigod Maui once lassoed the sun from the volcano's summit, elongating the day.

For an unparalleled experience, many visitors embark on an early morning drive to the Haleakalā Visitor Center, offering the prime vantage point for witnessing one of Earth's most spectacular sunrises. As the sun ascends, a captivating interplay of colors and light unfolds over the expansive sea of clouds, a sight famously lauded by Mark Twain as "the most sublime spectacle I have ever witnessed." Equally remarkable are Haleakalā's sunsets and the luminous night skies, revealing a canvas of stars.

Note that the National Park Service mandates reservations for personal and rental vehicles to access the sunrise from the summit district. Your reservation secures parking at the summit, excluding the required national park entry fee. The journey from Kāʻanapali and Wailea typically takes around 2 hours to reach the summit. Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of Haleakalā, where nature's grandeur unfolds against the backdrop of Maui's celestial wonders.
