Ho‘okena Beach Park

The Big Island's Favorite Local Beach

Located south of Kona, between mile markers 101 and 102, a well-paved road stretches for 2.3 miles, leading you to the picturesque Ho'okena Beach Park. Nestled at the foot of a rugged cliff and fringed with graceful palm trees, this beach park stands out as a gem on the Big Island. Unlike other beach parks, Ho'okena has a unique story. The local community rallied together and successfully petitioned the county to hand over park operations to them. Consequently, they have transformed it into a welcoming and typically family-friendly gathering place, open to both locals and visitors.

This delightful beach park offers a range of amenities, including tent camping (contact at 808-328-7321) for $21 per person per night, kayak and snorkel gear rentals, and boogie boards. You can also savor delicious food on-site. The facilities encompass showers, restrooms, picnic tables, and shaded areas.

The sandy shoreline, characterized by fine salt-and-pepper sand, can get hot on your feet. On calm days, keiki (kids) ride the waves and frolic in tide pools beside the sandy beach. Decent snorkeling opportunities await to the left. The bay often plays host to dolphins, adding to the charm of this pristine spot. If you take a leisurely 250-yard walk along the shoreline to the north, you'll discover a small inlet, roughly the size of a swimming pool, occasionally sheltered from the more powerful ocean waves.
