Hōlei Sea Arch

Explore the Big Islands Natural Rock Formations

The Holei Sea Arch, a magnificent natural wonder, stands tall at 90 feet, captivating visitors with its striking lava rock formation extending over the sea, creating a spectacular arch. Carved by the relentless forces of nature, it is a defining feature along this stretch of coastline. This awe-inspiring arch is entirely constructed from basalt, solidified lava from a Kilauea Volcano eruption that occurred some 500 years ago.

The heart of this formation, the hole that distinguishes it as a sea arch, was meticulously crafted by the relentless power of crashing waves. These waves relentlessly pounded the cliff wall, ultimately causing the center of the headland to erode and form this iconic sea arch. Unfortunately, it's a race against time, as this magnificent structure is slowly succumbing to the ceaseless waves, and it's estimated to be gone by the end of this century.

Holei Sea Arch is a prominent attraction situated within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, marking the terminus of the Chain of Craters road, a 19-mile paved road that beautifully winds through the East Rift and coastal landscapes of the park. Be sure to visit and cherish this unique natural landmark before it becomes a memory of the past.
