Hi'ilawe Falls, residing in the picturesque Waipio Valley, is undoubtedly the most renowned waterfall in this pristine Hawaiian locale. This majestic cascade is often described as standing at heights ranging between 1,200 and 1,600 feet, firmly establishing itself as the tallest waterfall throughout the entire state of Hawaii. An intriguing geological origin story unveils that these dramatic cliffs, beside which the falls gracefully descend, were formed by a Mauna Kea lava flow. In close proximity, Hi'ilawe Falls shares a cliff wall with the Hakalaoa Falls, which, in contrast, is frequently devoid of cascading water. An interesting historical tidbit reveals that the Lalakea Stream above the brink of Hi'ilawe Falls once served as a partial water source for local developments. Although this dam is no longer deemed necessary, it endures, and local groups are diligently advocating for its removal to restore the falls to their natural splendor.

You can exclusively witness Hi'ilawe Falls from within the confines of the captivating Waipio Valley or from an aerial vantage point. To catch a glimpse of this natural wonder, a brief 5-10 minute walk along the road to the left as you descend into the valley is all it takes. However, please heed the advisory not to hike beyond the falls, as this area is privately owned.

It is vital to note that any attempt to drive a vehicle into the valley is ill-advised. The road descends at an astonishing 900 feet within just one mile, securing its reputation as one of the steepest roads in the world. Hiking remains the sole means of access, but be well-prepared for the strenuous ascent back up. Regrettably, as of late February 2022, access to the valley has been temporarily closed.
